Nhat-Vu Dang is a Dutch Vietnamese jewellery maker based in Berlin and Hanoi. Positioned between two cultures, one half of a twin, and part of the gay community, the theme of identity and belonging have always been part of his DNA.

Jewellery came into his life in an unexpected manner. As a fresh art student at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, he tried looking for jewellery that matched this new identity. Unable to find what he wanted, he figured he better produce the pieces himself and ended up discovering the jewellery department. This was when he got introduced to the universe of contemporary jewellery: A world positioned between applied- and fine arts. It’s a place of experimentation and innovation that demonstrated a vast spectrum of what jewellery can be. He was instantly hooked and never looked back.

Since his graduation in 2011 Nhat-Vu was represented by Galerie Rob Koudijs and started using jewellery as a medium to process his past. Through these early exhibitions he became interested in the way jewellery can heal, connect, protect and empower it’s wearer. In search for his identity and for new ways of expression, his collections were often eclectic, but he found a particular interest in creating innovative and whimsical clasps that became one of his signatures.

His work was mainly exhibited and sold through galleries, but in recent years Nhat-Vu has ventured into the world of fashion, most notably in his collaboration with Berlin based brand GmbH where he designed and produced (show)pieces for their FW20-SS21-FW22-SS23 collections. This was when he started looking for a balance between the conventional and unconventional, to form a bridge between the worlds of contemporary and commercial jewellery.
