Unlocked Fantasies

A Name is Like a Spell

In 2012 Nhat-Vu moved abroad to Berlin Germany. As a result he got physically separated from his twin brother Dang-Vu who went through his belongings and found two silver rings Nhat-Vu made in his first year at the Rietveld. Realising how his jewellery can connect him and his brother, he started creating more pieces with that in mind. This was when he started to stamp his jewellery with ‘VU’, a part of their names that was given with the intention to invigorate strength and power to the name and it’s bearer.

Where the Hell are My Keys?!

In 2017 Nhat-Vu went to Vietnam for the first time to reconnect with his roots. As much as it was about reconnection, it was also a confrontation: as a Vietnamese born in The Netherlands, you’re considered a Westerner in the East, and an Asian in the West. Never fully belonging to either, but he realised that there is a sense of freedom in this position.
Through out his trip he started collecting ceramics portraying typical Vietnamese/Asian motives and did the same in his native country.
In a performance he took the ceramics and smashed them into shards, East against West: one affecting the shape of the shards of the other. While selecting the shards a fairy tale started to emerge of a boy who fails to write the 100 characters for prosperity and wishes to start a new life. Nhat-Vu made sterling silver copies of these shards, numbering and engraving the motives as accurately as he could without any prior experience. All mistakes and triumphs are documented in the pieces.
